Reding and Pivniceru meet in Brussels

Brussels, 05/10/2012 (Agence Europe) - EU Justice and Human Rights Commissioner Viviane Reding had a meeting in Brussels on Thursday morning with Romanian justice minister Mona Maria Pivniceru to discuss the appointment process for the chief prosecutor and the head of the Romanian anti-corruption unit, for which the Commission laid down conditions in an 18 July 2012 report on corruption and the legal system in Romania, the much talked-about CVM report (Cooperation and Verification Mechanism) following the raft of attempts by the coalition government under prime minister Victor Ponta to depose the Romanian president, Traian Basescu, which led to changes in the people at the top of various key institutions and a desire to alter decisions by the Romanian constitutional court. A fortnight ago, Commission President José Manuel Barroso pointed out Ponta's duties during the latter's visit to Brussels. On Thursday lunchtime, a Commission spokesperson with responsibility for CVM, Mark Gray, set out the Commission's expectations, noting that for the two positions in question, the Commission expected “fair and transparent” appointment procedures and that fulfilment of any promises made by Pivniceru would be carefully monitored. The Commission is planning to publish a new CVM report later this year, after the Romanian general elections in December. (SP/transl.fl)
