Parliament puts on pressure for passengers' rights

Brussels, 21/06/2012 (Agence Europe) - It is the ambition of the European Parliament to get things moving when it comes to passengers' rights. Georges Bach (EPP, Luxembourg) presented a report on Tuesday 19 June setting out in detail all the inconveniences suffered by travellers using different forms of transport. Complicated online booking and the lack of disabled access are among the problems bothering travellers. In the light of recurrent problems, Bach calls on the Commission to establish common rules for all modes of transport, and to ensure that legislation already in force is properly enforced. The Commission nonetheless considers that this is not possible as things stand, as the rights of those travelling by ship or by coach will not be implemented until next year. Nonetheless, over the coming months there will be an assessment of the rules on air passengers' rights, the director for DG Transport and Mobility, Matthias Ruete, said during a public hearing on the matter after presentation of the report. Georges Bach's request comes in addition to two other Parliament reports which, early this year, bemoaned the fact that methods practised by airlines were lacking in transparency. (MD/transl.jl)
