Brussels, 22/11/2011 (Agence Europe) - Enlargement Commissioner Stafan Füle underlined the importance of reaching agreement “on all internal aspects” of a comprehensive settlement of the Cypriot problem at the next meeting of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities and the United Nations in January 2012. He called on the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, Dervis Eroglu, “to make all efforts in the talks to reach the goal set by the UN Secretary-General”, he said after their meeting in Brussels.
Füle hailed the efforts of the leaders of both communities and the United Nations to reach a settlement of the dispute and reiterated “the European Commission's strong support” of the settlement talks. “The Turkish Cypriots will be among the main beneficiaries of a settlement as they will be able to enjoy fully the benefits of Cyprus' EU membership”, he said.
Füle and Eroglu also discussed issues relating to the aid programme for the Turkish Cypriot community “including its continuation as well as issues related to the crossing of persons and goods across the Green Line in Cyprus”, the commissioner said. (CG/transl.rt)
