Pressure on Brussels over hydrogen-powered cars

Brussels, 22/11/2011 (Agence Europe) - The hydrogen-powered vehicle industry is looking to make a market breakthrough, and, for this, is counting on the support of the member states and the EU. The technology exists. Now lacking is the refuelling infrastructure for hydrogen-powered vehicles to make a real contribution to green (there are no CO2 emissions) and fossil fuel-free travel. At the Drive 'n' Ride campaign in Brussels on Tuesday 22 November, promoting the technology, Henri Winand, Executive Director of leading clean power systems company Intelligent Energy said that “only a joint effort on the part of member states, the EU and the private sector will put these cars on the road from 2014”. This was a sentiment echoed by Jean David Malo, Head of Unit at DG Research and Innovation of the European Commission who gave assurances that this was a priority issue and that the Commission would continue to lend its support in this area.
