Brussels, 21/11/2011 (Agence Europe) - Talks on an association agreement between the EU and Mercosur (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, with Venezuela in the process of joining), which includes a significant trade strand, recorded further progress during the 7th round of negotiations in Montevideo from 7 to 11 November, with the finalisation of texts on general principles for anti-dumping and countervailing measures and global safeguard; services and investment; rules of origin; and customs and related matters. Negotiators from both sides also had a “fruitful” exchange of information on areas such as public procurement. Mercosur also submitted a written contribution on the sustainable development chapter. Restating their commitment to reaching a comprehensive, balanced and ambitious association agreement, the parties, making progress, too, on the political chapter of the association agreement, acknowledged “the need to progress in all key pending areas”. The exchange of offers on access to the agricultural and industrial markets, the most sensitive chapter of the negotiations, is still on hold. The two sides will meet once again in Brussels from 12 to 16 March next year. (EH/transl.rt)
