Quality of health care to be improved by increased patient responsibility

Warsaw, 21/11/2011 (Agence Europe) - In Warsaw on 18 November, the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union, working together with the health quality monitoring centre and the European society for quality health care, held a conference on the “latest developments in the quality of health care”.

The experts who attended the meeting agreed that “patients' individual responsibility for the state of their health” is one of the new solutions to be implemented to improve the quality of care. The EU would like to be able to count on a certain anticipated role of patients in their involvement with the health system.

“Escalating costs and social expectations are problem we need to take into account”, said a source at the Polish ministry of health. “As a result, as part of the joint action proposed on the safety of patients and quality health care and the directive on patients' rights in terms of cross-border health care, we are offering an interactive forum in this field”. The Polish conference came as part of a continuation of the meeting, organised by the Slovenian Presidency, in June 2008 at Mont Kranskiej. (VW/transl.fl)
