Barcelona, 21/11/2011 (Agence Europe) - Libya is likely to become a full member of the Union for the Mediterranean (UFM). It is currently only an observer. Colonel Gaddafi left his French partners (the co-presidents of the UfM) in almost total despair by permanently leading them a merry dance that prevented his country joining the Euro-Mediterranean process.
In a letter to the 43 UfM member states, the two -co-presidencies, France and Egypt said that Libya had now freed itself from dictatorial oppression. It is on the right road towards peace and stability and will now focus its efforts on rebuilding the country. The two co-presidencies believe that Libya's rapid integration into the Euro-Mediterranean regional community would be a sign of “encouragement” for Libya, which is on the way towards developing the normal characteristics of a state. In their letter, they call on UfM member states to confirm their “tacit agreement” acquired at a meeting of senior Euromed process officials on 15 November last and not to demonstrate their opposition in the short term. This agreement can therefore be considered as being accepted but Libya has not yet responded. (FB/transl.fl)
