Brussels, 04/11/2011 (Agence Europe) - It is very much in the economic interests, too, of employers not to neglect safety and so avoid the costs involved in road accidents. Their road safety efforts could once again be recognised in a competition organised by the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC). Working inter alia through the PRAISE (Preventing Road Accidents and Injuries for the Safety of Employees) project, which is co-funded by the European Commission, the ETSC has, for three years, been bringing pressure to bear on employers to tackle road safety at work. Part of the PRAISE project is a competition recognising best professional practice which reduces the number of road accidents at work or while commuting to work. According to ETSC Executive Director Antonio Avenoso: “Introducing road safety measures makes good business sense, particularly in a tough economic climate when employers should want to cut the costs of collisions in their vehicle fleets”. The competition is open to small and medium-sized enterprises as well as to larger firms, as there will be separate categories for each. Previous winners include British Telecom, the Irish Electricity Supply Board and KLM. (MD/transl.rt)
