Brussels, 04/11/2011 (Agence Europe) - The EU's electoral observer mission underlined, on Friday 4 November, how urgent it was to publish as soon as possible the full, detailed results of the Tunisian elections of 23 October for the constituent Assembly, for each polling station.
In its press release, the electoral mission states that it finds several factors give cause for concern. It considers that the preliminary results were not proclaimed in their entirety on 27 October. It calls for complete results to be provided constituency by constituency, taking up not only all the electoral lists but also the total number of votes cast, the number of blank votes and the number of votes declared invalid.
Observers point out that the proclamation of the results, which placed Ennahda in the lead with 41.7% of the votes, was done without any formal explanation published. This affects the principle of transparency as well as the right of citizens to be informed, they say.
The electoral observer mission also regrets the fact that lists were cancelled by the electoral commission in six constituencies on 27 October, without reasons for this being given. It also reveals that the successive proclamations of partial results, between 24 and 27 October, have caused confusion in the timetable for appeals filed with the administrative tribunal by lists that challenge the results of the elections, leading to a situation of legal insecurity.
The mission will continue its work in Tunisia, focused on the follow-up to the post-electoral contention, until the final results have been proclaimed. (CG/transl.jl)
