12/07/2011 (Agence Europe) - The European Federalist Movement wants emergency Europeanist government. European federalists recommend that an emergency government be set up in Italy with a strong European constitutional guarantee to face the economic crisis and the crisis of confidence currently facing the country. Giorgio Anselmi, Director of L'Unità europea, the review of the European Federalist Movement in Italy (Movimento Federalista Europeo, MFE), writes - under the title “For Whom the Bell Tolls” - that the fate of Greece could be linked to that of Italy. He points out that no safety-net would be able to stop the fall of the third largest eurozone economy. There is therefore the danger that a crisis in Italy would cast a shadow over the euro and over the whole process of European integration. The Federalists put forward proposals that they believe could avoid “such a disaster”. Anselmi believes the emergency government should state its Europeanist positions, based on the fact that Italian national interest coincides with the interest of Europe as a whole. Italy, he says, can still make a major contribution to European integration, something that France and Germany alone are not able to plan and propose. (Gp/transl.jl)
