12/07/2011 (Agence Europe) - Call for respect of human rights. Two years after the coup d'état in May 2009, Honduras is still facing considerable failings in the human rights field. Laima Andrikiené (EPP, Lithuania), who recently visited the country with a delegation from the European Parliament, bore witness to this with Paulina Vega, Vice-President of the International Federation for Human Rights, during a press conference in Brussels on Tuesday 12 July. They drew attention to the tremendous number of assassinations, including summary executions, threats to journalists and human rights activists, and to the impunity enjoyed by those who violate human rights. Andrikiené expressed her concern for the difficult situation in Honduras, saying that normality has not been restored since political elections in November 2009. She called on Europe for more aid and for it to work together with the civil society of Honduras. (G.Ba/Gp/transl.jl)
