Brussels, 22/06/2011 (Agence Europe) - Further to an investigation which started in April 2009 and a statement of objections submitted in February 2010, the European Commission on Wednesday 22 June fined the operator Telekomunikacja Polska S.A. (TP) €127,554,194 for abuse of its dominant position on the Polish telecommunications market. In violation of its obligations as incumbent operator, TP deliberately refused or used various techniques to slow down, over more than four years (from August 2005 to October 2008, at least) the remunerated access of other operators to its network and its wholesale broadband services, thereby preventing their effective entry onto the downstream telecommunications markets and depriving consumers of a more diversified offer. The fine takes account of the duration and seriousness of the infringement and was calculated on the basis of the average value of sales related to the provision of broadband access by TP in Poland between 2005 and 2009. In 2010, the total turnover of Telekomunikacja Polska stood at €3.9 billion (15.7 billion PLN). (F.G./transl.fl)
