EU set to target Iranians in new Syria sanctions

Brussels, 22/06/2011 (Agence Europe) - The European Union is set to impose a new round of sanctions on Syria this week, probably including at least two Iranian officials accused of helping the regime of President Bashar Al-Assad, news agencies report on Wednesday 22 June, quoting diplomats. The EU has already targeted 23 Syrian officials, including Assad himself, with an asset freeze and travel ban, over use of force against anti-government demonstrators. The new sanctions, discussed by foreign ministers on Monday, will target seven people and four companies linked to the president. The sanctions were drawn up by Britain and France. France's list was accepted in its entirety by member states, however one country objected to the British list, which included the Iranians. Following discussions on Tuesday, the lists were placed under a so-called silence procedure. They are both expected to come into force on Friday when they are published in the EU's Official Journal. At least one of the Iranians involved was reported to be a member of the elite Revolutionary Guard, and all are accused of providing military aid to Damascus to crack down on protests. (LoC)
