Brussels, 22/06/2011 (Agence Europe) - European Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas showed great enthusiasm for technological progress in the aviation sector at his recent visit to the Paris Air Show at Le Bourget, on Tuesday 21 June. He called for greater collaboration in technological matters to complete the “single European sky” as soon as possible and to make full use of it. He supports the SESAR programme for the modernisation of air traffic control in Europe, and hopes to facilitate the transition to the deployment phase of this programme. Proposals to this effect are expected after the summer break, particularly in terms of financing and management. The European commissioner also said that he expects ambitious plans from the member states for the creation of functional blocs of airspace in December 2012. This reorganisation of the sky should make it possible to “achieve the objectives of the EU in the key areas such as capacity/punctuality and economic efficiency”.
