Developing anti-tracking techniques

Brussels, 22/06/2011 (Agence Europe) - In a speech in Brussels at a conference on online protection (Online Tracking Protection & Browsers Workshop), the commissioner for the digital agenda reiterated the importance of online data protection in ensuring the confidence of internet users and promoting the development of the digital economy. “Privacy is not just about technical features. Without privacy, consumers will not trust the online world. And without trust, the digital economy cannot reach its full potential”, the commissioner said. Neelie Kroes calls for a correct and timely implementation of the new privacy and electronic communications directive and stated that the Commission would use all its powers to intervene in the event of delay. Lastly, internet users must have control over their data and need to know who are using them and why. The commissioner is in favour of the development of anti-tracking DNT (“do-not-track”) technology, which allows internet users to prevent their access provider from divulging their information to businesses for the purposes of targeted advertising. The commissioner calls on the stakeholders to implement standards for these DNT functions by June 2012. “If I don't see a speedy and satisfactory development, I will not hesitate to employ all available means to ensure our citizens' right to privacy”, the commissioner concluded.
