Brussels, 17/06/2011 (Agence Europe) - The representatives of the EU27 have approved the new rules proposed by the European Commission to step up the security and integrity of the national registers of online transactions on the carbon market and the future single register, which will replace them at European level early next year. On Friday 17 June, the climate change committee of the EU gave its approval to the proposal, which aims, amongst other things, to bring in a raft of preventative measures to combat cyber-fraud (confirmation of transactions, introduction of a list of viable accounts and new categories of accounts, client verification), but also to allow the competent authorities to react quickly in the event of fraud. Attacks by cyber-criminals, which led on 19 January to the temporary suspension of the national registers, are the reason behind the new regulation. It will be formally adopted if the Council and Parliament make no objection. (A.N./transl.fl)
