Council conclusions on online administration

Brussels, 31/05/2011 (Agence Europe) - At the Telecoms Council on Friday 27 May, the Council of Ministers adopted conclusions on the 2011-2015 action plan for online administration. The European Commission adopted the communication on this subject in December 2010, in an effort to promote development of online administration at local, regional and European levels. In its conclusions the Council welcomed the action plan and underlined what it considered to be the most important points. The Council particularly assessed the need to provide open, flexible and co-operative online administrative services, which are devised and created to meet the needs of citizens and enterprise. Member states are called on to introduce measures so that by 2015 50% of EU citizens and 80% of EU companies are using online administrative services. These services should be developed and improved, with EU citizens becoming more aware of them and trusting them more. Member states are also called on to enhance security and respect for private life in online administrative services by applying mutually recognised electronic identification solutions. Finally, civil servants in member states should also receive appropriate training in order to improve public services and reduce administrative charges. (I.L./transl.fl)
