On World No Tobacco Day on 31 May, Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy John Dalli announced the launch of a European prevention campaign in the next few weeks, which would target young smokers aged between 25 and 34 years old. Next year, he will submit a proposal to strengthen the 2001 directive on tobacco products. Every year, 650,000 Europeans die prematurely from tobacco related products. The commissioner said that this figure was very telling but was also perfectly avoidable. He said that the personal and social costs linked to smoking are simply too high. (I.L./transl.fl)
