Formal talks on status of Transnistria in sight

Brussels, 31/05/2011 (Agence Europe) - The EU hopes to announce the resumption of formal talks on the status of Transnistria, a breakaway region of Moldova, during the next informal meeting of parties involved in the talks (5+2 group for Moldova, Transnistria, Ukraine, Russia, OSCE and with the EU and United States as observers) on 21 and 22 June, in Moscow. “We expect that, during this meeting, we shall announce the resumption of formal talks” aimed at the political settlement of the status of Transnistria, a European diplomatic source said on Tuesday 31 May. He added that the EU has “many signals that all the parties are ready” in talks that were suspended in 2006. This time, the EU makes talks subject to Moscow's readiness to step up cooperation with the EU on security, a readiness that was shown at the last EU-Russia summit in December 2010. The EU believes such cooperation is possible but only if it provides “added value” to the ongoing dialogue. “If Russia is willing to show it can be a constructive partner in security issues, then it has the possibility to do it”, the same source says.
