Brussels, 28/03/2011 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission is planning to sanction imports of biofuel from the US with additional taxes, having noted that American exporters have illegally avoided customs duty in place, sources close to the dossier announced last week, quoted by the French daily newspaper Le Figaro. According to a first draft of the regulation proposed by the European executive, biofuel from Canada, and American biofuels in the form of a mix containing more than 80% mineral fuel, will attract customs duty in excess of €400 per tonne. If approved by the Council, this measure will enter into force in November and apply until 2014. The Canadian exporters BIOX Corp and Rothsay Biodiesel, a subsidiary of Maple Leaf Foods, however, will be exempted. (E.H./transl.fl)
