Brussels, 28/03/2011 (Agence Europe) - The EU urges the Central African authorities “to take every possible step to ensure that freedom of movement is fully guaranteed and to release detainees held without charge”.
This was the message expressed on behalf of the EU by Catherine Ashton, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, in a statement published on Monday 28 March. She goes on to say that she is “following the development of the situation in the Central African Republic with concern, and in particular the restrictions on the freedom of movement of certain members of the opposition and the instances of arbitrary detention that have been reported”.
Catherine Ashton points out that the Central African Republic is “bound, like any other State party” under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the African Charter on Human and People's Rights to “respect the fundamental rights of all its citizens”. (A.N./transl.jl)
