Brussels, 28/03/2011 (Agence Europe) - Following a meeting with the Macedonian Prime Minister, Nikola Gruevski on 25 March in Brussels, Commissioner Stefan Füle declared that the dispute between Greece and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) over use of the name “Macedonia” should be brought to a very rapid conclusion. If they fail to reach this conclusion, there is, “a tangible risk that the country could fall behind in the accession process” explained the commissioner. Greece is determined to block accession negotiations for FYROM (a candidate country since December 2005), as long as the question of the name is not resolved in a satisfactory way. Füle has urged Gruevski to continue reform efforts. The Commission is eagerly awaiting progress in the field of political dialogue, judiciary and public administration reform, the fight against corruption and freedom of expression. The commissioner also asked for explanations from the Macedonian prime minister on what measures FYROM was taking to fight against inappropriate practices following the removal of visas for entering the EU (Schengen area). Füle asserted that “countries benefitting from visa-free access to the EU need to take all necessary measures to limit unfounded asylum application”. (H.B/transl.fl)
