“Special” Foreign Affairs Council on 10 March

Brussels, 03/03/2011 (Agence Europe) - Faced with the extraordinary developments unravelling in Libya and other North African countries, the EU is significantly increasing the number of meetings and “special” summits it is holding. Following the decision of Herman Van Rompuy to arrange a special European Council for heads of state and government on 11 March in Brussels, Catherine Ashton has also now called for a meeting of foreign affairs ministers from EU member states at a special working dinner on 10 March, which will also be held in Brussels. The objective is to prepare the discussions that leaders will hold at the European Council and which foreign ministers will not be attending. In a declaration by the high representative published on Thursday 3 March, we read that Ashton will represent the ministers at the summit. This is not all: when the European summit takes place on 11 March, foreign affairs ministers will all meet up again at Gödollõ (near Budapest) for their informal “Gymnich” meeting (11-12 March), which was programmed quite some time ago. Catherine Ashton will join ministers in Hungary on Saturday 12 March, to debrief them on the results of the European summit. (H.B./transl.fl)
