Brussels, 23/02/2011 (Agence Europe) - European Commission President José Manuel Durão Barroso has read “in fine detail” the letter sent to him on Thursday 10 February by Commission Vice-President with responsibility for Industry Antonio Tajani and Internal Market Commissioner Michel Barnier, asking that the European Commission open a debate on the timeliness and need for assessing non-European investment in the European Union. This information was given by Tajani on Wednesday 23 February in answer to a press conference question. Barroso has still to respond to the initiative and to decide if and when the college will discuss it. While both fully support investment in the EU from beyond the Community, Tajani and Barnier decided to raise the issue as it is seen as very important by European business people: they do not want investment to hide attempts to close down businesses after all their knowledge and expertise has been gleaned.
