23/02/2011 (Agence Europe) - EAPN report on social impact of crisis in 2010 recovery policies. In its report, the EAPN points out that the austerity measures introduced by the different governments will only make the already very serious economic, social and financial situation, worse. The European Anti-Poverty Network underlines that: (1) the social impact is getting worse due to austerity measures introduced by national governments, in which the poorest members of society are having to pay for the crisis and which also prevents any sustainable recovery; (2) the social impact is gravely underestimated and ignored; (3) action by charities is being severely undermined and subsequently threatening their fundamental contribution to society; (4) the crisis was not inevitable but rather, the result of measures sought by the governments: deregulation and massive reductions in investment in social services, which have therefore resulted in a dramatic increase in inequality; (5) a fairer alternative, towards creating prosperity for all, is possible; (6) the EU must re-insert values at the heart of the European project and base the EU 2020 strategy on an ambitious and sustainable social vision.
