Tackling shortage of French language interpreters

Brussels, 31/01/2011 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission, facing a shortage of French language interpreters for the next four to nine years, has begun an awareness-raising campaign, seeking to re-kindle young people's interest in this profession. The Commission will, therefore, have a stand at the European Education Show in Paris from 2 to 5 February which will bring together three of the EU's interpretation units (Commission, Parliament and Court of Justice). Interpreters will set out the career opportunities in interpretation offered by the European institutions for students and will invite them to try the “speech repository”, an interpretation e-learning facility which contains all the languages of the EU. If there is no increase in numbers of qualified graduates coming forward to replace those retiring, the European institutions could lose almost half their French-language conference interpreters over the next 10 years. Working with their counterparts in the Parliament and the Court of Justice, the Commission's DG Interpretation has made a short video encouraging young French-speakers to think about interpreting as a career.
