Brussels, 18/01/2011 (Agence Europe) - At the initiative of several Italian MEPs, an oral question was raised on Monday evening in Strasbourg at the European Commission on the question of inter-country adoption in the EU and the protection of children's rights. A draft resolution will be put to the vote on Wednesday. Italy is in fact concerned about this as it is suffering a number of problems with Romania, whose legislation bans international adoptions in order to avoid children smuggling, a source explains, but which nonetheless has a large number of orphans on its territory. MEPs therefore asked the Commission whether coordination would be desirable at European level although this competence remains national and there are a large number of conventions on the protection of minors and on parental responsibility, between the 1967 European convention on the adoption of children and the 1993 Hague convention on the protection of children and cooperation in respect of inter-country adoption. The European Commission is not, however, preparing to take action, Commissioner Georgieva said on Monday. The commissioner said it was not necessary to take specific measures, as the international conventions provided an ample regulatory framework. The Commission will, however, be following the subject very closely, in particular as part of the future Commission communication on children's rights, foreseen in 2011, and application of the Charter of Fundamental Rights.
