EU hesitant to pursue process

Brussels, 14/12/2010 (Agence Europe) - EU enlargement policy is hardly striding confidently forward, as may be witnessed by the outcome of the European foreign ministers' meeting in Brussels on Tuesday. Even though ministers officially repeated their firm support for the enlargement policy, accession negotiations, for example with Turkey, are scarcely making any headway. The Belgian Presidency of the EU Council of Ministers had hoped this month to open a new thematic chapter - on competition - in talks with Ankara. French Secretary of State for European Affairs Laurent Wauquiez said on Tuesday that “there won't be any opening of chapters under the Belgian Presidency”. The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, which has been an applicant country since 2005, is still awaiting the formal opening of accession negotiations, which have been deadlocked because of its dispute with Greece over the use of the name “Macedonia”. On Tuesday, ministers decided, too, to leave it up to the European Council to grant Montenegro applicant country status. (B.C./transl.rt)
