Brussels, 14/12/2010 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 13 December, the European Investment Bank (EIB) granted a €200 million loan to Compagnia Valdostana delle Acque for co-funding an investment programme for the modernisation and overhaul of existing hydroelectric dams and generating plants and for the construction of new hydroelectric infrastructure, all located in the Valle d'Aosta. Funding will also be used for building a photovoltaic plant in the Piedmont region. By improving the reliability of existing hydroelectric plants and increasing their output, the programme will make it possible to increase electricity supply, inject power generated more effectively into the grid and help to meet growing demand during peak periods. The project is thus in line with national and European objectives on renewable energy. It also helps Italy meet its commitments regarding the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, the EIB underlines in a press release. (O.L./transl.jl)
