Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network regrets

Brussels, 14/12/2010 (Agence Europe) - As the EU and Morocco were meeting in their 9th Association Council, the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network (EMHRN) expressed its “concern” over “recent human rights abuses in Morocco” and called on Morocco and also the EU to “comply with their human rights obligations”. At the same time, the Network welcomed the dialogue established between the Moroccan authorities and civil society and said it expected concrete results from this dialogue. It stated that it was concerned about the signing of a re-admission agreement (which refers to the return or retention of migrants passing through the kingdom) called for by the EU. The Network calls on both parties, within negotiations on the forthcoming action plan on implementation of the enhanced status, to commit to press for the democratic reforms, including justice reform, that have been announced and awaited for several years, but which have still to come to pass, for example, on the independence and impartiality of the judiciary, a press code, the lifting of all reservations on the Committee for the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), tackling impunity and corruption. The EMHRN also said it was extremely concerned by the situation in Laayoune, the main city in the Western Sahara. (F.B./transl.rt)
