Brussels, 25/11/2010 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 24 November, the European Commission went to the European Court of Justice (third and final stage of an infringement procedure) in a case against Lithuania, for non-respect of European rules demanding a clear separation between the National Regulatory Authority (NRA) for telecommunications and that in charge of providing services in this area. At the same time, the European Commission sent a reasoned opinion (second stage in procedure) to Romania, calling on the country to comply with these same rules. In Lithuania, the remit for regulating telecommunications comes under the authority of the Department for Communications, which is at the same time a public company providing wireless telecommunication services, despite a reasoned opinion sent to the country in 2009. In Romania, the minister for communications and the information society also exercises control over two companies providing networks and/or telecommunication services. (I.L./transl.fl)
