01/10/2010 (Agence Europe) - Terrorist groups are still a real threat in Europe despite the falling number of attacks, said the director of Europol, Robert Wainwright, on Thursday 30 September. He said that a there had been a huge drop in the number of terrorist attacks in Europe that used to be carried out by Islamic groups, but this hid the fact that Islamic groups are still active. He was commenting after attempted attacks were averted recently in the UK, France and Germany. On 29 September, the British media reported on alleged al-Qaida plans to carry out simultaneous attacks in the UK, France and Germany but the attacks were averted by European intelligence services. This scenario was confirmed by intelligence sources quoted by Sky News, claiming that the planned attacks were similar to that at a big hotel in Bombay, India, in November 2008. (B.C./transl.fl)
