Brussels, 13/09/2010 (Agence Europe) - Thanks to the excellent cooperation shown by the Serbian president, Boris Tadic, in recent discussions with the EU on the joint UN resolution on Kosovo (EUROPE 10211), Serbia can hope that its application to join the EU will take a major step forward in October. The Belgian Presidency of the EU hopes that the forthcoming General Affairs Council, in October, will ask the European Commission to prepare its opinion on the Serbian application, the Belgian foreign minister and president of that Council, Steven Vanackere, announced on Monday 13 September. He said that many member states hope that the constructive attitude of the Serbs when the resolution on Kosovo was being drafted “will not go unanswered”, Vanackere said after the General Affairs Council. It will require the agreement of all of the 27 member states to put the accession request to the Commission. (H.B./transl.fl)
