ECONOMIC INTERPENETRATION / (eu) education

According to Shanghai rankings, US universities are best. - The US still dominates the Shanghai rankings, which lists the best universities in the world. The “Top 10” for 2010 is largely dominated by US universities (eight of them in the top 10). Harvard is still the best and is still in first place, followed by Berkeley (second; US); Stanford (third; US); Massachusetts Institute of Technology (fourth; US); Cambridge (fifth; United Kingdom); California Institute of Technology (sixth; US); Princeton (seventh; US); Columbia (eighth; US); Chicago (ninth; US); Oxford (tenth; United Kingdom). In the top 500, the US is also ahead with 154 universities listed, Germany is second with 39 universities, the United Kingdom (third with 38 universities) and Japan in fourth place with 25 universities. The Shanghai rankings list is eagerly awaited every year but it is, nonetheless, subject to criticism, especially with regard to science research (the number of mentions given in specialist reviews, the number of Nobel prizes, etc), criteria for which US universities are excellent but not for teaching. The European Union has also decided to draw up its own list, which will provide a guide to the different academic disciplines for students intending to enrol at university. (I.L./transl.fl)
