Brussels, 03/09/2010 (Agence Europe) - Long awaited to take a stance on the controversy surrounding the expulsion of Roma by France, MEPs are to take up the matter on Tuesday next during their first session after the summer break, in Strasbourg. On that occasion, MEPs will discuss the situation of the Roma in Europe with the EU Council and the European Commission. The vote on a resolution is scheduled for Wednesday. “All European citizens will have the same rights within the EU. No one can be expelled from a country just because they belong to the Roma minority”, said Jerzy Buzek, Parliament President, pointing out that the members of the Assembly were worried about the situation. The legality of measures taken by the French government remains to be defined not only at legislative level but also with regard to freedom of movement and stay, and in relation to the Charter of Fundamental Rights, the European Commission and many members of the civil liberties committee stated on Thursday. Maltese MEP Simon Busuttil (EPP) asked when the Commission would be able to say whether or not such action is in line with the EU body of law. Françoise Le Bail, Director General for Justice at the European Commission, said this would be once it has all the facts available to it. The Commission has not ruled out giving its decision on Tuesday (EUROPE 10206). (B.C./transl.jl)
