Parliament calls for more active EU role in OSCE

Brussels, 03/09/2010 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament would like member states and Community institutions to begin reflection on ways for the EU to play a more active part in the work of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), and to determine how the 27 member states may better cooperate with the pan-European organisation in reaching common goals, especially in crisis prevention and management. The EP committee on foreign affairs (AFET) held an exchange of views on Thursday 2 September on a motion for a resolution prepared by Libor Roucek (S&D, Czech Republic) on reinforcing the OSCE and the role that the EU may play in this respect. The rapporteur above all requests that the EU - through the intermediary of member states and the permanent president of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy - ensure that the next OSCE summit to be held on 1-2 December 2010 in Astana (Kazakhstan) brings about a clear roadmap for further engagement on strengthening the OSCE. Roucek also takes the view that the president of the European Parliament should be invited to attend the summits. The EP, he says, should step up its participation in the OSCE and study the possibility of setting up a true delegation there. Lithuania, which is to hold the forthcoming OSCE presidency in 2011, is called upon to ensure continuity in the process of strengthening the organisation. The report will be voted in AFET on 5 October. (H.B./transl.jl)
