Strasbourg, 15/06/2010 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 15 June, the European Commission tabled a proposal aimed at simplifying and radically reducing European legislation on type-approval of vehicles in order to put an end to the duality existing between the EC directives and the regulations of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). To put an end to the duality between EC and UNECE directives, the Commission suggests that Community law should directly integrate 61 different UNECE regulations on vehicle type-approval. Thus, type-approval delivered in line with UNECE regulations will be considered as EC type-approval, and duplication will be avoided concerning technical requirements such as certification and administrative procedures, to the advantage not only of industry but also of the national authorities. Also, the proposal aims to improve access to the market for European motor vehicle manufacturers in third countries signing the UNECE agreement in 1958. With EC complete vehicle type-approval, car markers may obtain approval for a kind of vehicle in one member state if it meets the technical requirements, before marketing it throughout the EU without additional testing.
