Israel evades questions raised by Europeans

Brussels, 23/02/2010 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 22 February, while in Brussels, Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman carefully avoided answering questions regarding his country's involvement in the assassination of a Hamas official in Dubai. “I think you have seen too many James Bond movies”, he said as a response to the allegations that Israeli secret service agents (Mossad) had perpetrated the murder using false European passports. That was the only thing the minister said after a meeting with European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek of Poland. Avigdor Lieberman also met the foreign ministers of Ireland, Micheál Martin, David Miliban of Britain, and Miguel Angel Moratinos of Spain, whose country currently holds the rotating EU Presidency. He dined with the EU foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, of Britain. Addressing all present, he said in a statement that there was no proof Israel was involved in the killing, repeating this in a press release diffused during the day by his ministry in Jerusalem. There have been a good deal of gratuitous accusations made against Israel, he added in the statement. According to the police in Dubai, members of the commando responsible for the assassination held forged British, Irish, French and German passports, which has caused anger in the countries concerned. A statement approved during the meeting of EU foreign ministers avoids pointing a finger of blame at Israel, as nothing has yet been proven (EUROPE 10083). Those conducting the investigation in the Emirates are convinced that the Mossad is behind the operation and have sent out arrest warrants against 11 people holding false passports. For now, it would seem 15 forged passports were used to carry out the operation. (B.C./transl.jl)
