23/02/2010 (Agence Europe) - Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Zapatero has called for fresh impetus to be given to Turkey's accession negotiations to the EU and for “as many chapters as possible” to be opened during the course of the Spanish Presidency of the EU. “Spain firmly supports Turkey's entry to the EU,” he stated after a meeting with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Madrid on 22 February. “Turkey is thinking about four chapters being opened. We will see how far we can go. It seems an understandable target for Turkey,” Zapatero said. At the moment, only 12 of the 35 chapters have been opened and, of these, only one has been provisionally closed. (H.C./transl.rt)
