Brussels, 08/01/2010 (Agence Europe) - The main thrust of her term of office if Cypriot Commissioner-designate Androulla Vassiliou is confirmed in the Education, Culture, Youth, Sports and Multilingualism portfolio will be to bring creativity and innovation to all segments of the policies in her remit. In education, the European Commission would help member states in their efforts to modernise and improve the quality of teaching and ensure that education is perfectly aligned with the realities of the labour market, she said. Highlighting the need to find new, more innovative ways of teaching to develop young people's creativity, Vassiliou expects much of the newly set up European Institute of Innovation and Technology in making a “real difference in this respect”. Student mobility, and the mobility of young people in general, would be another of her priorities. The new Youth in Action programme scheduled for 2011 should contain provisions to promote mobility among young people. With this in mind, the transfer and recognition of diplomas and qualifications had to become a reality. In the area of culture, Vassiliou would encourage the development of the creative industries, pursue efforts to have European heritage labels awarded, and bring forward proposals to strengthen the Cultural Agenda. In terms of multilingualism, the Commissioner-designate would like high quality interpretation and translation. This is a particularly difficult objective given the current paucity of candidates for certain languages and the emerging demand for others. (I.L./transl.rt)
