THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/iraq/press

13/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - Reactions to the release of Florence Aubenas, one of the key reporters of the daily Libération and of her guide and interpreter Hussein Hanoun Al-Saadi after five months of detention in Iraq, have flowed thick and fast since Sunday. Josep Borrell, President of the European Parliament who was “happy and moved”, stressed that these 158 days of anxiety and waiting will also have been 158 days of general mobilisation by millions of Europeans. Evoking the fate of those who are still being held hostage, Mr Borrell stressed: “We must continue to put pressure on the hostage-takers (…) and mobilisation must not flag”. The European Commission, for its part, “calls on the different groups in Iraq to release all the hostages still in captivity and to pursue their objectives through the political process rather than with violence and intimidation”.
