14/05/2004 (Agence Europe) - On 6 May, the United States celebrated the 50th anniversary of the presence of the delegation of the European Commission in Washington, at the same time as the enlargement to 25. Secretary of State Colin Powell claimed the right for the US to celebrate these events, given the support they had shown to European integration from the very beginning. "As well as alliances of the heart between Europe and America (...), we are celebrating our confidence in the future, not just in Europe and not just in the transatlantic world, but in the whole world", he added. He also expressed his desire to see the European Union continue to expand. Günter Burghardt, the head of the delegation of the Commission to the United States, said that none of the historic events being celebrated "could have been achieved without the active economic institutional support of the United States". Our differences are "clearly outweighed by what unites us", he said.
