International demonstration 24 May in Brussels for changing common agricultural policy

Brussels, 14/05/2004 (Agence Europe) - In a backdrop to a meeting on 24 May in Brussels of the Agriculture-Fisheries Council, farmers organisations from Europe and other continents will be putting together a campaign for changing the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). A demonstration is planned at 12H30-14H in front of the "Justus Lipsus" building at the Council. The European Farmers Coordination (EFC), which is actively taking part in this event, considers that the EU has committed its agricultural policy to a triple international, social and environmental dead-end from which it has to get out. This explains why the EFC says this campaign is for a "fair and legitimate CAP", which maintains a lively countryside in all regions of the enlarged EU, and which respects the environment".

Other organisations that have signed up in support of the appeal are: - Coordinadora de Organizaciones de Agricultores y Ganaderos (COAG), Spain; - Sindicato de Obreros del Campo (SOC), Andalusia in Spain; - National Family Farmers Coalition (NFFC), USA; - Federation of Peasant Organisations of Indonesia, (FSPI); - Movimiento Sem Terra (MST), Brazil; - Via Campesina (association bringing together a large number of farmers' representative organisations from the whole world, as well as many countries from the developing world); - Réseau des organisations paysannes et des producteurs from West Africa (ROPPA); - Platform ABC, Netherlands.
