06/03/2002 (Agence Europe) - EU Economy and Finance Ministers were no more enthralled than were Justice and Home Affairs Ministers with the Commission's proposal of creating a European prosecutor responsible for protecting the Communities' financial interests. The EcoFin Council had a brief exchange of views on the issue noting many difficulties of a practical and constitutional order, stressing that the time had not yet come to take such a radical decision, Council sources explained. Young bodies, like Eurojust and Olaf, must first find their footing, the ministers stressed on Tuesday. The JHA Council said similar things last week (see EUROPE of 2 March, p.13). For the economic and finance ministers, this issue must now be discussed within the JHA Council alone.
