THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/cfsp declaration of laeken/mr cfsp

19/12/2001 (Agence Europe) - The 19 December edition of El Pais stated that Javier Solana had threatened to resign from his post of CFSP High Representative because of the reference, in the initial wording in what would become the Declaration of Laeken, on the need to better co-ordinate EU external relations and establish a synergy between Mr CFSP himself and the European Commission of External Relations, Chris Patten. Mr Solana has recently emphasised again that this synergy already existed with Chris Patten and according to EL Pais, informed Guy Verhofstadt that it was unacceptable to begin a debate on his role as CFSP High Representative while he still had a mandate for the next three years and that if this continued he would have no option but to hand in his resignation. According to El Pais, Tony Blair and Gerhard Schröder have been called on personally to intervene and help avoid a crisis by simply mentioning in the Declaration of Laeken that there was a need to "strengthen" the synergy between the High Representative and the Commissioner.
