Brussels, 19/12/2001 (Agence Europe) - The Belgian Presidency has announced the launching of a study entitled "the environmental governance of the EU: a reference in terms of intervention measures". The study will be carried out by an experienced group of consultants in collaboration with the Institute for a European policy on the environment (IEPP), an NGO based in London.
The main aims of the study are to: - strengthen the environmental policy thanks to proposals on new forms of governance; - begin permanent reflection between the EU Council Presidencies in order to improve the Union's environmental governance. Three sectors will be examined - energy, transport and agriculture - as well as an inter-sectoral issue, namely cohesion policy. The process will include assessment of the environmental intervention measures that already exist in the EU, both legislative and non-legislative measures, as well as recommendations intended to improve the governance of the EU. A link will also be established with corporate governance. The study will be available during the first half of 2002 and its results will be examined with the Member States concerned.
