09/07/2001 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday last, the European Parliament adopted the report by Jutta Haug (German Social Democrat) on the situation of own resources for the budget 2001, in which it "notes with satisfaction" that the Belgian government has announced its intention to discuss the "eventual merits" of a European tax. The plenary, however, during which differences were expressed, refused - unlike the position adopted by the budgets committee - to "support the efforts with a view to its establishment" (see EUROPE of 29 June, p.17). MEPs rejected this paragraph by 290 against, 195 in favour and 20 abstentions.
