Parliament invites Member States to respect aims of fleet capacity reduction

Brussels, 09/07/2001 (Agence Europe) - With the adoption last Thursday, in Strasbourg, of the report by Niels Busk (ELDR, Denmark) on the European Commission's annual report on multiannual guidance programmes for fishing fleets (MAGP), the European Parliament criticises the unwillingness of Member States to respect the aims of fleet reduction (seven or eight Member States apparently do not meet the aims of the fourth generation MAGP). The Parliament calls on the Commission to take the measures necessary to make the Member states fulfil the fishing fleet reduction aims and to adopt clear and precise criteria for measuring the capacity of vessels and fleet categories. MEPs invite the Commission to deploy every effort so that the criteria established by the countries for measuring tonnage and the power of propulsion of vessels may be compared, with a view to guaranteeing harmonised reduction of the capacity of the different fleets.
