09/07/2001 (Agence Europe) - With the adoption of the report by Swedish Green member Jonas Sjöstedt on the European Commission communication on the safety of mining activities, the EP again calls for a directive on mining waste that covers sites in operation, out-of-use sites and dumping sites. He invites the Commission to propose a legislation that obliges the mining company responsible to establish plans for declassification of mines and new or existing settling bassins and to provide for a sufficient reserve for closure, restoration and surveillance measures. Recalling that the Member States are currently responsible for the restoration of mines and abandoned settling ponds, the Parliament considers that it should be possible for the Structural Funds and other sources of Community financing to contribute to the cleaning of contaminated land.
