24/04/2001 (Agence Europe) - "The BSE crisis and foot-and-mouth have as consequence to threaten the jobs of over 100,000 workers at European level" the European Federation of Trade Unions in the Food, Agriculture and Tourism sectors (EFFAT), estimated at a demonstration in Luxembourg on Tuesday, in front of the building where the Agriculture Ministers of the Fifteen were meeting. EFFAT makes ten recommendations for a "new agricultural policy", including: training foodstuff producers, compulsory standards in health and safety at work, introduction of stamps for ecological quality product inspections, increased promotion of activities for the common good in agriculture (preservation of the countryside) and special measures to promote food safety in candidate countries. EFFAT brings together 120 trade unions from 35 countries and, in Europe (including Central and Eastern Europe), represents workers from the agri-food, farming and tourism industries.
